Our Story: From Personal Struggle to Dedicated Care

Alma Thompson's own struggles with foot and back pain led her to create Almawi Limited in December 2004, with the mission to help others facing similar challenges. Over time, the clinic expanded to offer a wide range of services, from massages to pedicures. In May 2021, Almawi shifted its focus to specialise in Podiatry services, particularly for diabetic patients and seniors, recognising their unique needs. Today, Leana Huntley, Alma's daughter, serves as the Clinic's Director and Podiatrist, continuing the legacy of providing compassionate and expert care.

Common Foot Conditions

A photorealistic image of a human foot, with the plantar fascia highlighted in red, showing inflammation and pain. The image should be focused on the heel area and depict the pain experienced in plantar fasciitis.

Athlete's Foot

The feet are the most popular area for infection by certain fungi called Dermatophytes, causing Tinea Pedis (Athlete’s Foot). This ailment is another very common problem we encounter at our Clinic and is experienced by up to 70% of the population at some time in their life. Adult males are most affected, it’s rare in women. It can also affect children regardless of gender.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails, also known as onychocryptosis, are a painful toe condition. This occurs when a toenail is curved and grows into the skin at the end or side of the toe. The first symptoms include pain, redness, swelling, and inflammation at the spot where the nail curls into the skin.

Fungal / Discoloured Nails

When fungi attack a toenail, or the skin under the nail (called the nail bed), it causes a fungal nail infection. Fungi can enter your nails through small cuts in the skin around your nail or through the space between your nail and nail bed.

Morton's Neuroma

Morton's Neuroma is a painful condition that primarily affects the area between the third and fourth toes. It involves the thickening of the tissue surrounding the nerve that runs between these two toes, leading to the formation of a neuroma.

Edema

The medical term for swelling is Edema. It occurs as a result of excessive fluids storing in the tissues of the body. The whole body can be affected but generally it would rear its head in areas like the hands, feet, legs and ankles. The extra accumulation of fluid is what causes the swelling of the tissue.

Callus

Many people get calluses at some point in their lives. However, they don’t always know the difference. Some call or come into the Clinic with sad faces, complaining bitterly about their corn/s. If it’s a complaint over the phone, from questioning you can more accurately determine the true problem.

Metatarsalgia

Are you experiencing burning and pain in the balls of your feet when you walk? Do you feel discomfort in the front of your feet when wearing certain height shoes? No matter what shoes you wear, do you feel like you're walking on gravel? These are all common complaints that amount to one thing - pain! It's time to find a solution.

Bunions

The medical term for Bunions is Hallux Valgus. An enlargement of the joint behind the big toe, bunions represent one of the most common deformities of the forefoot. Inflammation around the joint and a displacement of the bone under the first toe occurs. This causes the big toe to move towards the smaller toes. This shifting of the bones causes a bony prominence on the side of the patient’s foot (the bunion joint). Over a period of time the big toe may come to rest under (occasionally over) the second toe.

Plantar Wart/ Verruca

The Americans call it a Plantar Wart, the English call it a Verruca; while in Trinidad & Tobago, it’s known as a ‘Fisheye.’ Called by either name, in any climate, it is a common complaint, worse though in tropical climates. A plantar wart/ verruca is a small skin lesion which is commonly found on the soles of your feet especially at pressure points such as the heels, or on the balls of your feet. Plantar warts got their name from the plantar surface, which is the sole. Sometimes plantar warts appear in clusters and other times it’s only one.

Achilles Tendonitis

Achilles Tendonitis (aka Tendinitis) is a condition where the Achilles tendon is inflamed or irritated. The Achilles tendon is the band of tissue that connects calf muscles at the back of the lower leg to your heel bone. Athletes are especially prone to chronic Achilles Tendonitis. It is often a running injury or other sport-related injury resulting from overuse, intense exercise, jumping, or other activities that strain the tendon and calf muscles.

Sweaty/ Smelly Feet

Hyperhidrosis or Plantar Hyperhidrosis (sweaty feet) and Bromhidrosis (smelly feet) are annoying and sometimes embarrassing conditions, that tend to occur quite often. Hyperhidrosis is not a temporary condition. Most of the people who are affected by these ailments have suffered for many years, usually since childhood. After a long day of wearing whole shoes, even in the air-conditioned office, you feel that moisture in the footwear. As for field workers, the blazing sun is a killer to the feet…the smell is horrible! Usually, persons who suffer from sweaty feet have sweaty hands and armpits as well.

Flat Feet/ Fallen Arches

Flat feet are also known as pes planus or fallen arches. It is characterised by a flattening of the medial longitudinal arch (inside foot arch), which causes the foot to roll in excessively, in order to maintain stability. This excessive internal rotation occurs at a joint in the ankle and is known as over pronation.

The image should be highly detailed and realistic, with a focus on capturing the intricate details of the feet and the technology being used. The background should be a clean, minimalist office space, with a subtle blur effect to highlight the subject. Style: photorealistic, ultra-high quality, 8K resolution.

Biomechanical Assessment

It is a comprehensive analysis of your gait and foot mechanics, which is usually done in two parts. First, we do the scans and send them out for Analysis. Once returned, there is a Consultation with the Podiatrist who goes through the scan with the Patient.  makes the relevant recommendations.
